In The Hot Seat with Justin Melvey
Smash Hits, January 2000
We hear you used to ski for Australia
I spent a lot of time skiing through Europe and Canada
when I was younger. I was touring with the Aussie team. Even now, when
I take a holiday, I go to Colorado and go skiing.
And you've done a few other things too
I lived in Hollywood for a few years. I've done about
five films and been in daytime soaps and commercials. And I did modelling
to support my acting career.
Do you prefer LA or Australia?
I prefer the business over there 'cos the pace is really
fast but I've been through nine earthquakes, riots, fires and floods!
(Laughs!) During my first earthquake experience I ran for the bathroom
door to stand under the frame cos apparently that's the safest place cos
the wood doesn't fall on your head! You find these out through word of
mouth!
Did you hang out with any famous people in LA?
Everyone! One of my favourites is Tony Curtis (Hollywood
Actor) - I partied hard with him one night and I've met Tom Cruise
and Jack Nicholson. If you go to certain parties then you get to rub shoulders
with all of them.
Any famous chicks?
Oh yeah, I've met Jennifer Lopez - she's awesome. One
of my best friends was co-producer on Selina which started
Jennifer's career. She's great - she's gorgeous and so sweet. I don't
think she's getting married to Puff Daddy though - that's rubbish.
What do you think of the pop scene?
All the power to them! There's a market for them and I
think if they're capitalising on that then they're onto a winner.
Tell us about your tattoo...
I got it years ago. I wanted to pick out the first animal
that resembles me and I came up with a panther. It's clawing into my back
and has claws and little blood marks.
So you're a dangerous kind of guy then?
Well, I'm a bit of an adrenalin junkie. But the most outrageous
thing I've ever done is bungee jump from a hot-air balloon in Colorado!
My buddy owns a balloon company so we blew up this big balloon, which
had two ropes tying it to the side of a snowfield. I was like, Oh
my God! then it was 3-2-1 jump! We jumped 350ft! (106 metres)
I was screaming and yelling. Then we were lowered down, I had my bags
already packed, rushed to the car and caught a plane to LA!
