Alf's premonition of the future
After being diagnosed with a brain tumour, Summer Bay's beloved Alf Stewart
(Ray Meagher) is wheeled into surgery. On the operating table, Alf, whose
condition has made him think his late wife Ailsa (Judy Nunn) is alive again,
suddenly falls precariously close to death.
His heart stops and it's at this point, as he hovers on the edge of the
afterlife, that he has a harrowing premonition in which he sees what Summer
Bay would look like without him, a few years down the track. And it's a
far
from pretty sight. "He goes into the future and sees rampant graffiti
in
Summer Bay," says Ray. "The kids have no respect for anything."
In Alf's dream, Noah (Beau Brady) has become a beach bum who has hit the
bottle big-time. Fisher (Norman Coburn) is old and frail, while Josh (Daniel
Collopy) is a ruthless property developer unhappily married to Hayley
(Rebecca Cartwright).
What is Angie's agenda?
Poor Nick (Chris Egan), he doesn't know where to turn as his manipulative
teacher Angie (Laurie Foel) toys with his affections at every opportunity.
Still very attached to his girlfriend Jade (Kate Garven), Nick is confused
by Angie's seductive promises.
"Angie is a very cunning person and there is always a reason behind her
motives," says Laurie. She reveals that Angie is using Nick to further her
designs on Rhys (Michael Beckley), who has recently separated from his wife
Shelley (Paula Forrest). "She is trying to get information on how the family
is coping and, more importantly, how Rhys is coping without Shelley."

Les played

Haunted by heartache
Still grieving after the tragic death of her husband Vinnie, Leah Patterson
is finding life a daily struggle. After packing Vinnie's (Ryan Kwanten) belongings
away, Leah tries to convince herself and the world that she can't dwell on
his death forever.
But as the days pass, Leah (Ada Nicodemou) begins to wonder if the Bay is
still the right place for her. Would she find it easier to move on with her
life if she returned to the city with VJ where they would be surrounded by
her family? "There's so much heartache in Leah's life right now,"
explains Ada. "Everything around her reminds her of Vinnie and the life
they once shared."
What's more, says Ada, Leah is struggling to cope with raising baby VJ on
her own. "She knows that if she moved back to the city, she'd have her
mum and her dad and her other brothers there to help," she says.
"There's a whole family unit waiting there for her, whereas in the Bay
she just has her brother Alex (Danny Raco). She knows that it's not really
fair that he has to keep putting his life on hold for her. The city is really
starting to sound like the best option for Leah."

Home and Away set burnt
With the recent devastating news of the New South Wales bushfires, Home
and Away was affected as well with the sad news that along with many other
homes in the area, the location used for the Caravan Park and Summer Bay House
burnt down. Many of the caravans as well as "Colleen's" mobile home
and filming equipment were destroyed as well as Summer Bay House, the roof
of which collapsed in destroying the second floor and most of the veranda.
Because the house was mostly stone, rebuilding apparently won't be as hard
as it appears. Crew members say that stock footage of the house will be used
until the fire can be incorporated into the storyline. Ironically, the 2002
season finale was originally going to be a bushfire home and away returns
to Australian screens early 2003.

Major Cast changes for 2003
The cast of home and away will receive a shake up when Rebekah Elmaloglou
(Sophie) returns in an extended guest role. She will appear from this year's
season finale.
Seven has confirmed that Cornelia Frances, who recently came back as Morag,
the acid-tongued sister of Alf (Ray Meagher), will continue the role throughout
2003.
Also expected to return is Rowena Wallace as the troubled June. Rumours suggest
the veteran actress will resume the role in 2003.

Chris Egan, Ben Steel, Ray Meagher and Kimberley Cooper are leaving Australia
for a while to do panto this year. Kate Ritchie is taking time off so too
